This coming Monday is Memorial Day, the day when we commemorate those military men and women who lost their lives in battle while serving our country. The long weekend also marks the unofficial start of summer, but let’s not forget those whose lives have contributed to the freedoms we sometimes take for granted today.
Car Shows This Weekend
In the meantime, the car show circuit is heating up with quite a few shows on tap this weekend including the following finds:
60th Annual Fulton County Homecoming Festival – Salem, Arkansas is the place to be on Friday and Saturday for one of the largest events of season. On Saturday, beginning at 10 am, will be the antique car, truck and tractor show. This event is held at NAEC south parking lot, just off the court square. At 12:45 pm, a parade begins which will feature antique cars. For more information please visit http://www.salemar.com/.
American Heritage Car Show – If you are in Escondido, California this Saturday, then a car show benefiting the nonprofit Escondido History Center is where you’ll want to be. Hundreds of pre-1974 vehicles will be on display at Grape Day Park from 9 am to 3 pm. Cars can be entered for $25. Dode Martin, a Fallbrook resident and member of the National Hot Rod Association Hall of Fame will be honored at the event. Visit http://www.escondidohistory.org/content/events/car-show.htm for more information.
Birmingham Ford and Mustang Club & Jim Skinner’s “Best Show Regardless” all Ford Car Show – This is the longest name for a car show that I’ve ever seen, perhaps the best way to identify that only Ford makes are eligible to enter. Being held on Saturday at Jim Skinner Ford located at 9924 Parkway East in Birmingham, Alabama from 9 am – 3 pm, the show costs $15 to enter with winners announced promptly at 2 pm. Visit www.jskinnerford.com for directions.
Fifth Annual Open Car Show – The Harrison Ruritan Club will be hosting a car show this Sunday from 8 am to 3 pm at Chattanooga (TN) Riverpark, with judging scheduled for twelve noon. In previous years “Habitat For Humanity” and other worthy causes have received funding thanks to the car show. For 2009, the club will be expanding the “good character” program to local middle schools. Special judging categories for Corvette and Mustang enthusiasts will be held with other categories established depending on turn out. Benefiting the Carey High School Athletic Boosters, the day’s events will kick off with an all you can eat breakfast from 9:30 am to 11 am, followed by the show. The event, which will be held on church grounds from 11 am - 3 pm, is expected to draw more than 200 classic cars whose owners can register from 9 to 11 that morning. Visit www.msclassiccruisers. com for registration information and forms.
Two Big Track Races This Weekend
Of course, if you aren’t anywhere near these six locations you can view two of the largest “car shows” of the weekend on your Plasma TV. At 1 pm on Sunday, the Indy 500 will be raced followed by NASCAR’s Coca Cola 600 at 5:45 pm. Visit the respective sites for show details and watching opportunities.
Enjoy the weekend — don’t forget to thank a veteran as well as active military personnel.
