I enjoy attending the big auto shows when I can, but some of my favorite events are those put on locally by enthusiasts including ones organized as a benefit for a particular cause.
Lately, I’ve been getting emails from around the US telling me about some of the upcoming shows. Once warmer weather hits, as it has now, these types of shows seem to proliferate. May is an excellent month to hold a show because hot weather has yet to set in. With this thought in mind, I give to you some of the “coolest” shows on the upcoming car show/display calendar:

Event: 6th Annual Eagle Point High School Thomas Ussary Memorial Car & Motorcycle Show
Where: Eagle Point, OR
Notables: Over 200 cars of all makes/models, motorcycles and trucks will be at this major event. Includes a poker run, engine blow-up, raffles, vendors & a swap meet. There are 46 different trophy classes which include six for motorcycles. Every type of vehicle is welcome, from mopeds to semi-trucks. he proceeds from the show go to the Thomas Ussary Memorial Scholarship fund and the Eagle Point High School Skills USA Club.

Event: Hot Rods for a Cause
Where: Kalaeloa Airport, Honolulu, Hawaii
Notables: Event is expected to draw hundreds of vehicles. There will be food, live entertainment and lucky number drawings. Organizers are hoping to offer awareness and education on the issue of domestic violence. Donations received will help support the Domestic Violence Action Center.

Event: 17th Annual East Coast Boardwalk National Car Show
Where: Wildwood Boardwalk; Wildwood, NJ
Notables: Ten trophy classes, awards announced and presented on Thursday night.

Event: Weekend of Wheels — Laughlin Classic Car Show of 2009
Where: Laughlin, NV @ 8 hotels/casinos
Notables: Various activities include show and shine; slow drag, burn-out and roaring engine competitions; a poker trivia walk; and a classic car and parts corral. There are more than 260 total awards including Top 150 Vehicles, Dignitary Picks and Sponsor Awards, Specialties Awards, Crowd Pleasers Awards, People’s Choice and Participant’s Pick. In addition, more than $15,000 in cash and drawing prizes will be awarded to car show participants.

Event: Annual Car Show and Spring Festival (Benefits Fire Dept.)
Where: Trinity, AL
Notables: Arts and Crafts vendors, Moon Walk and SuperSlide for the kids along with other kids activities, and plenty of good food. Admission to the festival is $10 for the entire day, car and truck show, concerts beginning at 10 am and ending with Rhonda Vincent and The Rage at 4pm, kids activities, and vendor area. Admission to the event will register guests for door prizes.

Event: “Cruise the Smokies” Cherokee Spring Rod Run 2009
Where: Cherokee, NC
Notables: More than 500 classic and customized automobiles from pre-1972 bucket Ts to ’32 Fords are expected to participate in this year’s family friendly Rod Run. Vehicle registration is $30 by May 1 and $35 at the door. All registered vehicles are eligible to compete for cash and prizes. Beautiful mountain backdrops set the stage for live entertainment nightly. Concerts start at 6 p.m. at the Indian Fair Grounds Amphitheater.
